Emerging into the hustle of Beijing’s busy streets from the elegant comfort of Bvlgari Hotel Beijing, we set off on an adventure rich in history and culture and guided by the ever-knowledgeable Jerry Dong, a “human Google” with an encyclopedic expertise on Beijing and China.
The Journey Begins: a Scenic Drive to Jinshanling
While his depth of knowledge and passion for Beijing shines through, Jerry originally hails from Dali, Yunnan, a region known for its breathtaking Erhai Lake. During our 2.5-hour drive to Jinshanling, he shared a bit of his own journey from Dali to Beijing and his studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University. He had great perspective into real life in Beijing, weaving in little-known facts and personal anecdotes about the city he calls home. Jerry’s enthusiasm for history and his insider knowledge added real depth to the experience–tips on finding the best local tailors in Beijing to fascinating insights about the Wall itself.
The Great Wall at Jinshanling: a Timeless Wonder
The fresh mountain air of Jinshanling felt far removed from very urban Beijing. There are many parts of the Wall can be explored but Jerry chose this location for the mix of restored and undisturbed sections, allowing us to see the Wall as it was at different periods in its long history.
Jerry set the scene with an engaging overview of the Wall’s history, including vivid stories of the ancient soldiers who once stood guard here, all while surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Great Wall of China.
Hiking the Wall: a Walk Through History
As we began our three-hour trek along the Wall, Jerry identified out details we would have otherwise missed—from the unique brick patterns used during the Ming Dynasty to the strategic placement of watchtowers. Each step was a journey in time as his storytelling brought the Wall to life.
Jerry had obvious pride in the Wall which, once built to protect against northern invaders, now served as a symbol of unity for China. His personal reflections, mixed with moments of humor, turned the hike into a memorable experience.
The views were spectacular—watchtowers stretching endlessly into the horizon and framed by the rugged mountains of Jinshanling.
Returning to Beijing and a COZY Dinner at Jing Yaa Tang
On our drive to Beijing, Jerry again entertained us with stories of the city’s architecture, politics and hidden gems only a local insider would know. Jerry’s love for China’s vibrant energy was apparent.
Back at the Bvlgari Hotel, we had just enough time to freshen up before heading to Jing Yaa Tang for a very COZY dinner. The ambiance was warm and inviting. The highlight of the dinner was undoubtedly the Peking duck, carved table-side. Each bite was that famous harmony of crispy skin, tender meat and rich hoisin sauce—the perfect ending to our day.
The COZY Takeaway
Exploring the Great Wall of China with Jerry was an experience that went beyond limits. His passion, encyclopedic knowledge and personal stories brought the history of the Wall and the culture of Beijing to life. From uncovering hidden details to sharing his love for the city’s vibrant energy, Jerry turned this day into an enriching and very COZY journey.
